Africa vs The West

I recently came across this post on Facebook and it reminded me a lot about perspectives. In all honesty the African perspective is not always revered or noted as much as it should be, and to make matters worse what we learn in school doesn't always make us ware of the African perspectives. We end up indoctrinated by the West and we lose our sense of "African-ness". Not to diminish the seriousness or even eliminate the humanity in us in realising tragedies such as the holocaust were awful but its sad to realise that even more deaths go on to this current day in Africa. In this error of becoming global village, I find that it can be quite easy to fall into the trap of mourning losses of America, France, New Zealand and forgetting that everyday countless people are dying in Nigeria, in the Congo, even in Mozambique. These people keep dying simply because they want to make a living. Its so easy to forget. Especially being in a country like Botswana were tragedy never really hit as hard as what our neighbouring countries did. We recently just hit over 2million in population, and its crazy to think that over million die in other African states.

My aim, is to continually educate myself on issues around the world as well as issues in Africa and my own country and try to have a well rounded understanding of what may be going on in the world. University has taught me to not only to find information but also be wary about where the information is from, who its from and what their intentions were because nothing is ever black or white.

  2. but onto what you mentioned, we lose our "African-ness" because of media, the type of media we consume is not by us, i grew up watching Cartoon Network and they didnt care about Africa or what she stood for. What i am trying to say is these kids need to know these things, they need to know that its fine to speak Kalanga or Sesarwa, we need to make sure we make cartoons and superheros that are black and teach our ways to kids.
